We watched Suicide Squad last week and Heathens by twenty one pilots played at the end credits. My kiddos liked it and added it to their playlist. As I kept hearing it in heavy rotation throughout the week, it certainly became very catchy! Did 21 Pilots take their hook from another song? It sounds really familiar to me, but I can’t place it. Anyways, this became an obvious acapella for my next mix. Shortly after that decision, the instrumental of I Got 5 On It just instinctively came to mind!

The first iteration of this mix took me about 30 minutes to put together. I met their tempo at 89 BPM. A necessary edit that probably comes off subtle is that the line “But after all I’ve said, please don’t forget”, adds an extra 4 beats to the measure, throwing the whole track off if you don’t account for this. So I had to extend the beat that additional measure both times it occurs in the song. It’s easy to do seamlessly, but I have to imagine some of you might be getting some spidey-senses about that awkward extension… or, you might shrug it off.

After some time, I knew this track needed more flair. So I gave it some! Watch out for the heavy base trap remix slowly fading in at about 2 minutes. Also added a reverb effect on the vocals at the end of the track, on the final bar. I hope it isn’t overbearing. Oh, and added the vocal intro (that reverse reverb fade-in effect) into two other spots on the track. Should be easy to catch those!

I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I do. I consider this a banger!

Fun Fact: I almost trashed this mix! After tempo matching the two tracks and laying them out together for a quick preview, I’m not gonna lie, it sounded awful! The lyrics of Heathens are on a specific key, and those lovely bells on Da Luniez track were just too noticeably out of harmony. But thankfully I realized my audio software allows me to change the Pitch of the tracks! So I dropped the I Got 5 On It beat down one “Semitone” and that did the trick! 🤜🏻🤛🏾 High-Muthaphukin-FIVE!!! If you play the original track by Da Luniez, then swap to this mix, you’ll notice the keys don’t match!

It’s funny, after I finished it, I then thought someone else has probably made this mix already. And sure enough, like the truth, 🛸 it’s out there! It only has about 10 views on YouTube after being released 7 months ago. Unfortunately, it is off key and doesn’t sound well. But nonetheless, big shoutout to YouTuber Sunday Woohoo for catching this!

  1. […] It was noticeable enough that I had thoughts of scrapping the mix. However, just as I did with I Got 5 Heathens, I was able to change the key of Pink Floyd’s track up one semitone! This seems to bring it […]
